There are only 9 states with no income tax. If you’re living outside of Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, Wyoming, Tennessee, or New Hampshire, you are going to pay state income tax. However, two states; New Hampshire and Tennessee don’t tax wages. Instead, these two states tax interest and investments.
Now that the 2020 tax season is approaching, you should know where to look for your state tax refund. While you’re going to use IRS’ Where’s My Refund tool to track the status of your federal tax refund, you must use your state’s website for your state tax refund. We included each state and their respective websites to track your state tax refund in the list below.
- New Jersey
- New Mexico
- New York
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- West Virginia
How long does it take to get state tax refund?
On average, your state tax refund will be issued to you in 4 to 8 weeks depending on where you live. The fastest state to issue tax refunds is California with 2 weeks of expected time while less populated states like Vermont issues it within 6 to 8 weeks.
Although this is mostly related to the workforce within your state’s department of revenue, it all comes down to how many workers there are per resident. Other than that, how you file your taxes plays a major role as well. Assuming you’ve filed your state tax electronically, it is almost certain that your state tax refund will arrive you sooner than someone who filed in person.
So it’s always beneficial if you file your taxes electronically not to save time in the tax offices but so that you will get your refund faster.
How to track the status of state tax refund?
Just as you would use the IRS Where’s My Refund, you only need to provide a couple of simple information. The most important one being your exact refund amount. You can look at your tax refund to find your tax refund amount. Other than that either you need to enter your SSN or ITIN to verify your identity.
Once you enter all the information the tool needs, you will know the status of your tax refund. Where’s My Refund for federal tax refunds is updated on a daily basis but your state tax refund tracker might be updated more frequently. Again, this all depends on your state.
